Santiago Parramón (1962), qualified as architect at the UPC in Barcelona, is founder-director of the office Parramon & Associates and later of the architectural atelier RTA-Office.
Graduate P.A.D. by ESADE - Business School, Barcelona, in 1990, Parramón founded EDE Infografics that same year, assembling a team of architects and computer experts with a clear aim -finding new ways to design.
Parramón was a pioneer in Spain introducing the well-known hardware “Silicon Graphics Computer Systems” as well as the TDI software, thus being able to work, model, and create space in three dimensions. Parramón cooperated, among others, with Rafael Moneo’s office in the simulation of the "Illa Diagonal Winterthur" of Barcelona and with Juan Navarro Baldeweg in the “Conference Centre of Salamanca” where the "IMAGINA" prize was obtained.
Santiago Parramón obtained a Master degree in “Architectures of complex scales” at the Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelonain 1994, and is currently developing his doctoral thesis "Architecture in Real time" inside the program "New instruments in the Architecture", in the Architecture School of Barcelona".
Parramón has lectured and provided conferences in different schools and universities of architecture throughout the United States (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA; Ball State University, Indiana, USA), France (Institut Nacional de l’Audiovisuel, París), and China (Tongji University, Shanghai; OCT-LOFT, Shenzhen). Additionally Santiago was an invited lecturer in the "Program for Management Development" in ESADE - Business School to explain his "Global - local" thesis.
The work and philosophy of Parramon’s architecture has been published in different articles at national and international prestigious architectural magazines and books such as “L'Architettura” (Rome), Architectural Design (London) and World Architecture Review (Shenzhen).
In 2007, Parramón founded RTA-Office (Shanghai Real Time Architecture Design Consulting Co.LTD) to work globally in architecture and design.

HKDI_International Archietctural Design Competition for the Hong Kong Design Institute, Hong Kong
2006-01-01
Our building, just as in the natural environment, is generated from a combination of bits of peninsular coast, in which, akin to an occupation and analogously with the “urbi”, the program will be set out. Between these, we will build bridges. With the aim of engendering relationships and intensifying communication. Lastly, we will inject knowledge into this configuration. A whole amalgam of routes, corridors and arteries will come from this, like a neuronal network, and will organise the entire flow of an interchange of knowledge.
Our building seeks to be a reflection of the collective awareness and feeling of this land as a space of people and contrasts. Let the building generate an event: a centre of urban institutional attraction.
As opposed to the forcefulness of the geometry of the immediate environment, the suavity of the object.
As opposed to the fragmentary, irregular impulses that the city dweller must assimilate, the integral nature of our scheme. As opposed to the rapid bombardment of stimuli, produced in the flowing of the individual through the metropolis, calmness. As opposed to noise, silence.
Residential and Cultural Resort, Uvero Alto Caribe, Dominican Republic
2006-01-02
This residential and cultural resort complex is located in Uvero Alto, Dominican Republic.
The low-rise constructions are private, fully furnished and offer an expanse of scenic tropical landscaping.
The resort is located on the coast and front on a mile of sandy sunbathing beach.
Its design is modern but comfortable, and very careful.
Continuous spaces, transparencies, screens, warm textures, light and clean colours, wood, white stone, sunscreen elements create shaded spaces, changing depending on time of day.
BAAD_ International Architectural Design Competition for the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem. Honorable Mention
2007-01-01
The new building rises in the urban framework like a piece carved delicately by hands craftswomen. We understand the building like a well-taken care of sculpture that contains space that lodges knowledge.
It shows as a fluid mass that solidifies acquiring its identity and generating the urban space. We do not try to "occupy" the plot.
It is both space and plaza at the same time. The "public" becomes "private" and he penetrates it. The "private" opens itself to his surroundings, blends with it.
The result is a unique volume that shapes as a whole. Like a body that interlaces, crosses and folds back on itself. It is at the same time a passage inwards and a path outwards.
The skin of our building lives. It is a question of filtering, making opaque or transparent and more or less reflecting.
It protects, feels and communicates. It reflects a culture, a city sunk in stone.
International Architectural Design Competition for the Central Library Headquarters and Cultural Centre at Dun Laoghaire, Dublin, Ireland
2007-01-02
The volume is characterized by great skylights, each one different from the other, their broken shapes contribute to the sculptural aspect of the building.
They stand out like bodies that break the roof top, its irregular geometries look to the north and give an "artificial nature" to the building that is mixed with the nature of the trees.
The sculptural form distinguishes itself like a whole, distributing and diluting itself in the land until exploding in a winding form. An organic piece comes out of a regular one and it is characterized by its unequal profile.
The program comes out in the image of the building: in the linear element is located the library along with the spaces reserved to the employees and the administration. The winding volume is specially conceived to contain the space of the cultural center with the public areas of cafeteria and gallery.
The organic volume is supported by three legs and seems to hang above the lake and hover with the trees, looking for sights towards the beautiful landscape with the sea further in the backround.
Fundamental importance has been given to the park and the water. The latter is an essential element of the garden, while the trees will be a filter between the building and its surrounding.
International Architectural Design Competition for the Sheffield Festival Centre, RIBA, Sheffield, UK
2007-01-03
The building manifests itself as a landmark of a city that aspires to renew its image and, next to the new buildings which rise around the plaza, will mark the entrance towards the center.
Our intervention strives to keep the industrial character of the existing building, while updating it. We "undressed it", we took away its exterior shell. Only a skeleton remains, the inner structure with its boxes that limit the existing facilities. We then "dressed it again". Like a cover, a new skin falls on top of the building, a coating of perforated copper, chosen for its durability, its aesthetic properties and its capacity to filter the natural light.
The existing volume is integrated with a new floor of offices and a projection that lodges on its first floor the mediatheque and the projection box. On the second floor, the new foyer sits just below its terrace, which is located at the very top of this new extension.
The projection indicates a clear access, creates a pleasant entrance and causes the architecture of the new building to be permeable, open and attractive for the people of Sheffield.
House T, Barcelona
1996-01-01
The project is born from a model that questions the traditional meaning of perspective, where everything was subordinate to certain vanishing points. In order to give priority to volume, We take distance from plans, elevations and sections so to give priority to volume.
Form and function are spaced out. We conceive the project coming and going from the initial space model and the proposed program’s diagram of the house until we achieve its fitting.
The house shows two opposite sides (do not confuse with facades). The first one is basically north oriented and adopts a highly sculptural and plastic geometry, which is defined by specific gestures which configure both physical and light access. The second one, south oriented opens towards the landscape that makes a contrast with the first one.
MASTERPLAN. Residential complex, offices, commerce. Rambleta Barcelona 2006-2013

House P, Barcelona
1997-01-01
The initial proposal for this house was generated out of the interest in a particular appositional concept, the making of space versus the making of forms- the expression of a structure which avoids the use of predetermined geometries.
The entrance to the building takes place through a footprint produced by pressure over the volume. Once inside, the space reveals its strong link to the exterior spaces by using a highly controlled transparency of its volume. Those transparencies consist on vertical slices that project themselves out. The interior circulation is a continuous revelation of spaces and relationships through a carefully controlled orchestration of events.
Landmark Tower, Shenzhen, China
2011-01-15
We translate the necessity to make a reflection on how the architecture can act when its socio-economic-cultural surroundings work in real time.
The place is Shenzhen and the historic moment to which it belongs is a synthesis of everything that occurs in this period and in this concrete place.
Shenzhen represents the birth of the new China, and the place of technological development. It defines the age of image and communication.
If the Eiffel tower was a sample of the industrial architecture of the last century, with time it has become a testimony of that period. Now, this Landmark Tower proposes to be the testimony of the beginning of this century. Testimony of a certain period and place.
We include the concept of illumination in all the landmark tower’s options. It will be treated as a sculpture where various images are to be projected upon, making it a singular and iconic object.
House MO, Barcelona
1998-01-01
The site properties and qualities – together with a formless conceptual space into which the different project values are inserted, generate a unitary, volumetric body that defines the different relationships. Thus, this body contains both programmatic and conceptual variables.
Doing without the functional logic, the architecture is formed as sculptural event in the landscape, plastic limit in the stroke between internal impulsions and exterior tensions.
The skin, achieved with a single layer system, captures and reflects the environment complexity and vitality, becoming element of cohesion more than of separation, between house and landscape, object and environment.
Barcelona Pavillon, Expo Shanghai, Shanghai, China
2010-06-15
To get an effective picture is required to identify an object, meaning their distinction from others, their recognition as separate identities.
We propose that the identification of the object is understood from a simple reading of urban morphology that characterizes the city of Barcelona.
The pavilion represents silence against noise. Mediterranean City versus Anglo-Saxon cities. City which propose, versus cities which compete.
A break in a place like Shanghai.

The apartments designed are basically divided into three types. Some luxury apartments located in high-rise building, located in the north area. Other mid-level, also located in high-rise buildings, and located in the southern part of the plot and finally, luxury apartments with different surfaces, located in low-rise buildings and closer to the sea.
The design of each apartment is unique.
They are large, versatile, flexible and open.
All buildings are very transparent, protected by wooden filters which give a highly sensitive relationship between interior and exterior.

A house, split in two, connected by one bridge. Relations, connections between the rooms are set. Every different layout of spaces suggests a new volume. Gradually, a shape takes form.
Manipulations of the skin create a negative/positive effect. During the day, these openings let in light and offer directed views to the outside. At night, the light comes out with different intensity, weither it be through a series of little punched holes, slits in the skin [which detaches itself from the house], through stained/textured glass or through large frank openings; breaking and blurring the boundaries of the levels inside.
The house is open and introverted: corridors are pushed to the outer perimeter and floor-to-ceiling glass opens up to the central patio. The texture and design of the glass are meant to match with the movement caused in the punctured walls.
Luxury Villas, Hainan Island, China
2012-01-21
There are seven types of Villas.
Surfaces elapse between 100 m2 and 300m2.
The villas are located on the south side of the main plot.
They are available on the site according to their level of quality, size and price according to their distance from the sea and their views.
One of the main elements is water. The presence of layers of water is constant in all typologies.
Water presence is related to different situations: thermal pools, which convey a feeling of freshness, sheets of water to reflect light, sheets of water as relaxation areas.
Most of these villas are closed on its perimeter adjoining neighbours and the access road, and open to the pool of water that stands in front of them. Here the vegetation and wood slats help to achieve the desired privacy.

The hotel is situated in the centre of the plot.
It is divided into two distinct parts. On the south side there are the rooms, and on the north side the services. The main axis runs from access to the seafront, clearly separates these two uses. In this way the hotel can work for both hotel guests and for the rest of the resort complex.
The main reception area is a large open space. Natural light enters through large skylights. Shades, vegetation, water, sieves, natural light are the main elements which convert this area in a space of sensations.

It is a night glamorous area; it is an interchange area and also a complementary area to the Expo.
It is the perfect complement to the expo, because after a day of culture, business and exhibition offers the people another kind of leisure and helps people to interact and have a complete and perfect EXPO experience.
In this area we will gather all the most prestigious and popular bars and clubs of the city. All of them will have their regular costumers; all they together will gather all the people from the city, everybody with their own style. This way we will make possible that the people of the city, the businessman of the city and the overseas visiting the city will meet each other and share experiences in a relaxed and amazing area.

The complex is fitted perfectly in the topography of the place, which assures a very good accessibility, both at a pedestrian level and at a vehicle level; in addition it obtains very good orientation and visibility.
Volumetrically the residence complex is organized in two bodies.
Both buildings are arranged in the parcel with a built front along the streets that surround to them. They consist of two common parking levels, the ground floor, three apartment floors and the top floor.
Above ground buildings are formalized in two parts: the socle (basement) and the higher part. The socle is the element that allows us to unify the built complex with its different material and texture.

International Competition by invitation, Urban Planning Nanhe Town, Tianjin, China
2008-06-22
The planning design reflects and shows the special character of Nanhe town’s regional economic, culture and historical elements.
The design Emphasizes the combination of natural features and human features; it pays attention to the coordination of road traffic function and landscape layout; it properly coordinates the relations with the existing surrounding function areas, roads and other elements.
Nanhe offers the opportunity to create a new city: the city of knowledge.
The definition of Eco-City is correct but generic.
We propose a city that is identified with knowledge, which is its specificity. Sustainability is assumed, is intrinsic to the creation and evolution of all the new cities. By far, the city of knowledge considers that “sustainability” is a challenge and a priority.

Renovation of the Riverside Moon Bay Park, access door and landmark building, Jinhua, China
2009-06-15
A single object located at a singular point of the city.
The place: a park, a path that leads from one point of the city´s river front.
Some large pieces indicate the entrance to the park. Then a road with a gentle slope leads to an object. Initially the path is composed of several bands, and together, as we move forward on the journey these are separated in order to accommodate such green grass and create spaces for contemplation.
We design the building as if it were a precious object. Perhaps we remember a cloud, a cloud of steel fabric that dematerialises with intent to appear slightly.
Perhaps this is a great lamp. At night it transforms into a container of light. One point that emerges light that shines in the city. A singular point, a Landmark.
A large sculpture, a reflection of a civilization in time of change, in times of greatness, an era of brilliance.
It is a multipurpose, multifunction, a place to perform a multitude of activities.

Our proposal is based on the design of two singular objects, a hotel and an office and commercial building. These two large sculptures take life with activity, and wear a special dress with a recognizable texture, a technology mesh, which covers the objects and gives them both modernity and memory of the place.
We hope giving this city its own character, its modern feature, designing objects that could place this city in the Contemporary World Architecture map.
The texture covering the buildings is different in the hotel, in the shopping and in the office building. But both have the same property.... "They unravel as they make up". In the bottom of the towers, the texture is more compact and closed and looking at the top of the building becomes lighter until even disappearing.

The main characteristic of this building is “solid and void”.
The big perforation penetrates and brings natural light to the lower parts of the building; it cuts with the purpose of letting in natural light.
Because of the complexity of the circulation system, we chose a simple and typical solution for each plant.
The restricted movement only occurs in the extrinsic aisles of the building, against the public route occurs adjacent to the big hole. This introduces the outside inward, allowing views and open space for all users.
